Honesty Is Indeed the Best Policy February 2, 2001 Submitted by Deborah Vaday, a reader from Hood River, Oregon Dear goodthings, One of our city's finest, a young police officer, really made a difference in my day. I processed his withdrawal transaction at the savings and loan where I work, as my first customer of the day. He withdrew money for a trip he and his young wife planned to take. All went without a hitch, I thought! But my supervisor took a call in the afternoon, and came to me and said, "Close your window and balance right now. That was a customer, and he says you gave him $100 too much." Sure enough I was exactly $100 short in my till. As I returned his call, I couldn't thank him enough for being honest. His reply was, "It's the right thing to do!" Do you know what a change he made in my day? It was the difference between a really, really good day and a really, really bad day! In my company, errors follow you for a whole year, so you are reminded of it for a long, long time. I have the utmost respect for this young man, a police officer in our town that I KNOW is honest! I now know that if I ever need an officer, I can trust this man. Two of our tellers have been out $100 dollars in the past, and even when they pinpointed and confronted their customers, both customers denied their windfall. As I will always remember this man's honesty, we in our office also always remember these two customers. My co-workers both were also amazed with this man's honesty. See, we know that this kind of thing doesn't happen every day. As I told him in a thank-you note, "I am indebted to you." Not only for his good deed, but for giving me more faith in my fellow man.
