You Never Can Tell January 9, 2001 Submitted by Thyme, a Web site visitor One morning my cats were making so much noise I couldn't think, let alone hear. When I finally went outside (after about 2 minutes of ceaseless cries) to see what had upset my feline family, I had no idea what, if anything, I would find. But when I looked down, I saw a plastic grocery bag. In that bag were 5 newborn black & white male kittens. Sadly one, Chalkie, had died. Soon I would lose one more. He was Bishme, he tried to fight but couldn't quite get over being thrown away. After that, the 3 remaining kittens were doing quite well, eating & getting bigger & better. Zack, he went to a loving home, where he still rules the roost. Tiny delicate Levi--he passed when he turned 1. Seems he had inherited several health conditions from his mother. He was the sweetest, gentlest little cat. He was knew when I was sad, sick or anything else. He loved to sit in my lap & have me to hold & cuddle him. To this day I still cry for him. The one & only remaining sibling is Zephyr. Now when Zep was tiny & while I was holding him to feed him, I could feel that there was something not right about him. So I took him to my vet where after tests, my vet told me that little Zep had a birth defect. It is more common in puppies & is called "flat puppy" or "turtle puppy". His little chest, instead of bowing out slightly, was flat. I was told that most vets recommend putting cases like his down. But I asked if Zep would have "quality of life". She said she didn't know. She had never seen a case like Zep's. So I decided to let little Zephyr live and wait to see how he fared. Well, the vet gave him to 1 year of age and said he would never walk or play. [LOL] It is a good thing that Zep didn't understand his "limitations." To this day he can run & jump & play with the best. Zephyr doesn't know he has a birth defect. Some days I look at him & marvel that he is so healthy. I have several cats & he is by far the largest. So this goes to show, you never can tell. I am thankful every day for Zephyr. I love him so.
