Children Give Their Two Cents' Worth
January 12, 2001

To find out how this goodthing is catching on, click here to read a letter from Renee Dunmore.

Submitted by Karen Jacobs, a reader from Long Island, NY

As one of your loyal readers, I just want to share what my daughter's school is up to. Her elementary school is the midst of its annual Penny Drive. The children are collecting and donating pennies to benefit Schneiders' Childrens Hospital on Long Island (NY). Last year they raised over $2000 in pennies alone for this worthwhile organization. As with any fundraiser, beating last year is the goal.

My daughter already has brought in more than 4 pounds of pennies (anyone Know how much that is?). We stopped counting after $10. I have here in my office, from my colleagues, another $8 or so waiting to go. (This I know for sure as this batch is wrapped--the four pounds was all loose change!)

My daughter really excited by this - she wants to see happy kids – and this morning mentioned that she hopes they buy new toys for the children at Schneider because, "Sick kids really need something to play with."

Readers Respond

Dear goodthings,

Our school will begin a penny drive in coalition with the Leukemia Society, and we are collecting pennies for Leukemia. Last year, our 2nd grade class collected almost $1000 in pennies. What a great way to raise money! This year we hope to include other grades. It's the counting that gives us the work. The donation of pennies is remarkable and for such a great cause. Also we learn a little about the facts of the Lincoln Penny.
