Co-Workers Save the Farm (Literally!) January 10, 2001 Submitted by Corinna O'Brien, Kingston, WA Dear goodthings, One late afternoon I was leaving my property for a short horseback ride. I was feeling a little blue and felt some fresh air might be just what I needed. As we were leaving the farm, my horse reared up too far. I fell to the ground and my horse fell on me shortly thereafter. I was airlifted to Harborview Trauma Center in critical condition. Although my horse was fine, the impact had crushed my pelvis, among other things. Around the third week of my hospital stay, I was finally becoming more mentally aware of my surroundings. I noticed on my wall, among the cards, that someone had drawn a picture of a thermometer. It was then explained to me that, after my co-workers were told of my accident, they began to donate vacation hours on my behalf. The thermometer signified the amount in weeks that had been donated for my recovery process as paid time-off. I was told that they wanted me to focus on my recovery and not concern myself with my financial responsibilites. I rec'd a beautiful basket of blooming plants and a card that simply read, "Love your REI family." I am almost fully recovered; my doctors are amazed with my rapid progress. My co-workers literally saved the farm! Read another story about compassionate co-workers, from goodletter #13. |
