NEW Laughter Sets the Pace April 26, 2001 Alexandra Lenz in Spring Creek, Nevada wrote to share a goodthing: My employer, owner and chef of a college cafe and a caterer, is extraordinarily considerate of his few employees. Those who are willing to do all that is involved in a busy cafe environment are treated as friends. Since we were requested to make ourselves available for a Mothers Day catering event, he has promised to treat us and our spouses to our own post-event celebration. He has often included us in dinners at his home, and gifts us with the occasional bottle of fine wine. I have worked in many environments, from being an elementary school librarian to medical secretary and transcriptionist. I have been "professional," well-dressed and reserved. But here, the soul can speak, the heart can sing, and laughter is shared by all. Of course, business is expanding at a gratifying pace. And, of course, we are loyal. It's a natural when being treated well is performed rather than merely given lip service. We have no "benefits," our wages are low (per industry standards), but we are appreciated.
