Puff the Magic Kitty Dear goodthings, You asked for pet stories... This is about Puff, a shelter cat adoptee. Little black thing with a pending heart condition we knew nothing about. After a trip to the wineries one sunny Sunday, my husband and I came home, stacked our new-found treasures on the rack, and went to bed. A couple of hours later Puff is HOLLERING at the top of her lungs. (Up to this point in her short life, I don't think we ever heard her voice.) The meows and cries had to be responded to. We went into the living room, and in the dark stepped on something sticky. Our hearts dropped. We immediately thought that Puff had been hurt. After fumbling for and turning on the light, we found that the sticky wasn't any of her. (Thankfully.) One of our newly purchased bottles of wine had - literally - popped its cork. There was red wine all over the tan rug. It hadn't absorbed in yet, so it gave us time to clean. Puff took a couple licks of her own to "help." Without her panic attack, we never would have been able to get at the stain while it was fresh enough to remove with relative ease. Puff was a darling cat, but she certainly liked her environment clean. An anonymous, but soft-hearted, goodletter reader New York, NY P.S. I've got more of those stories - given the number of animals that have passed through my life... The kitten that watched baseball games on TV and cried when you changed the channel or turned it off The cat that adopted my mother - strictly because my mother HATED cats - and brought her dead headless mice and birds as gifts My cocker spaniel that kept my house from being broken into 2 weeks after we moved in The escapee cat that wouldn't go back into the house except through the window he escaped from The other cat who determined that pulling ceiling tiles off the basement ceiling was the best time occupier and fun - even if she fell through to the floor (When she was missing in action, we'd knock out a few tiles ourselves til we found her.) They make me nuts - can't live without them though.... |
