Jeslyn Miller

The Boys and Girls Club is about more than boys and girls. It is about community: children, teenagers, adults, and the elderly.

I joined the Club when I was five or six. For several years, I played on a coed baseball team – until I was the only girl on an all-boys team. During elementary and middle school, I took a bus to the Club after school. As my parents both worked away from home, the Boys and Girls Club became my family. The Club permitted freedom and respected kids. I remember playing on the swing set (that so often goes unused), running around the gym, enjoying the recreational room's games and reading school books on the couch on the corner. I played basketball and spring soccer through the Club, and I took ceramics and arts and craft classes. When I graduated from middle school, I joined the Junior Board. It was at this time that I realized the full scope of the Club.

What had once been a hangout for children gained an entirely new meaning. Although the Boys and Girls Club sponsors many of the school activities, from middle school dances to high school Homecoming events, it also involves the adult community. We made pumpkin pies for the homeless on Thanksgiving and baked cookies for the firemen on Valentines Day. We helped Senior Board members fund-raise at the phone-a-thon and assisted parents by caring for their children on the Club's “Parent's Night Out”. We even sponsored a Senior-Adult Prom for the elderly members of our community.

I have also been inspired by many people within the local Club. The Teen Director, Elena Foshay, is an endless source of energy and ideas. Her vigor makes me want to become more involved and give back to the Club. Program Director, Sue Miller is a constant guiding force. As a child she was synonymous with the Club for me: we played games, went on field trips and did art projects; and, as I matured, Sue encouraged me to join the Junior Board. Everyone that I meet and work with is extremely dedicated and enthusiastic. The Club is a second home. It has allowed me to be a part of the community, while, at the same time, giving back to the community.
