"I recently learned that in an average lifetime a person walks about sixty-five thousand miles. That's two and a half times around the world. I wonder where your steps will take you. I wonder how you'll spend the rest of the miles you're given."
-- Fred (Mr.) Rogers

Slavik Mironchuk
February 8, 2001

Before the Boys and Girls Club opened, I never had anything to do. I stayed at home and watched TV. At night I would go hang out on the streets with my friends. I didn't really have anyone to help me with my homework. I only had a few friends and didn't do a lot throughout my community. Throughout the last 3 years, the Auburn Boys & Girls Club has become very important to me.

I go to the Boys and Girls Club almost everyday and seem to always learn something new while I'm there. At the club, there is always a fun activity to do or I can get tutoring and help with my homework. I can never say, “I'm bored,” because I can always walk over to the club and have something to do. The club is now able to use the gym at the Elementary School down the street, which is great. It provides us with another fun activity to participate in. Hopefully someday we can have our own gym. Having the Boys and Girls Club so close to my house has made school much easier for me as well. I work very hard at having good grades and the staff has helped me in many ways with my schoolwork.

The Boys & Girls Club has become like another home and family for me. I always know that I can go to the club and someone will ask me about my day or if I have homework to do. I feel cared about by the staff as well as the other members. They always take the time to help me or just talk about my day.

The Boys & Girls Club provides a safe place for me and other children. This is not only good for the kids, but also for the parents and the community. My parents always worried about what I was doing and if I was safe before the club was here. Now they know where I am and that I am safe while doing something constructive with my free time. The Club helps the community by getting kids off the street so that we don't cause problems or get into trouble, which in turn makes the community safer.

I don't believe that I'm the only member who feels this way about the club. I feel that the club is equally important to all of its members. We all enjoy coming and appreciating all that the staff has done and continues to do for all of us. Having the club in Auburn has changed my life and not only made me a better student, but has given me more friends and a second family.
