GoodThings on Public Radio February 8, 2001 The people have spoken, and we're listening. Awhile back, we asked you if you'd be interested in receiving links to short audio files of our favorite, uplifting public radio pieces of the week. We're excited -- the response was a resounding YES! So here's how it'll work. Every week, you'll find brief summaries of our seven favorite stories (one for each day of week). After each summary, you'll find a link to the story, which you'll be able to listen to whenever you want on your own computer. Sound good? So this week, here's what we've got: a gym that's more like a circus, a dog that's like a husband, wonderful wigs, women with pucks, the Paris mystique, a North Pole "Survivor" with a purpose, and an ad hoc Alaskan ambulance. Did you miss something? We can help. Keep reading! If you want to listen, you'll need RealPlayer on your computer. (If you don't already have it, it's a FREE download.) Visit Real Networks. FRIDAY, February 2 | These Days, The Gym's A Circus One New York circus artist is banking on the fact that people would exercise more if hanging from the flying trapeze were part of the deal. [Morning Edition] Listen (length of clip 6 min 14 sec). SATURDAY, February 3 | Behind A Dog's Eyes Edith S. Marks contributes "New York Stray" to National Public Radio's National Story Project and suggests that the wayward dog you see may be trying to tell you something. [Weekend Edition Saturday] Read. SUNDAY, February 4 | Styling, Fitting, and Consoling Amy of Denmark is more than just the first salon name that women facing chemotherapy come to in the phone book. It's also where thousands of cancer patients needing wigs are treated as healthy and where casual smiles return to once inconsolable faces. [Weekend All Things Considered] Listen (5:30). MONDAY, February 5 | The Lumberjacks: Hockey for Girls? Hockey-playing high school girls all over Minnesota have broken ranks with the boys and are carrying the torch on their own high school teams for their grandmothers who were never allowed to play. [All Things Considered] Listen (5:00). TUESDAY, February 6 | Even the Dogs Speak French Why is Paris such a great city? Is it the unparalleled cuisine? The absence of skyscrapers? Its pure loveliness? The fact that no relationship is anonymous? That's just the tip of the iceberg. [Morning Edition] Listen (7:19). WEDNESDAY, February 7 | Women To Depolarize the Pole? Set to debunk the conventional wisdom that the North Pole is a "man's world," a group of pioneering women are planning a once improbable trek that will take them all the way there from Russia -- on skis. Their real goal? To use teamwork to become role models for young girls. Call it "Survivor" with a purpose. [Morning Edition] Listen (4:30). To learn more about the upcoming documentary "Women At The Top," visit WomenQuest.org. Wonder why there's no place for this kind of "Survivor" on TV? Be a part of our "I Want My GoodTV" campaign. Listen to a bonus clip from NPR's Morning Edition on why Hollywood is crazy for reality TV. Listen (6:52). THURSDAY, February 8 | Sick in Alaska: Anywhere But Here? Combine the appendicitis of an eleven-year-old with no hospital and the wintery remoteness of Haines, Alaska, and for most parents, you've got cause for panic. But when the need is great, ordinary parents can dig in deep and learn to function a lot more like a wildly effective SWAT team -- and can even figure out how to laugh. [Morning Edition] Listen (3:17). WE WANT TO HEAR FROM YOU. Did we miss a good public radio story this week? Want to recommend one for next week? Share it with us! |
