"Leaders are visionaries with a poorly developed sense of fear and no concept of the odds against them. They make the impossible happen."

GoodThings on Public Radio
April 19, 2001

Could your music collection use a little more variety? Again, public radio comes to the rescue. Sounds Eclectic, a program of Santa Monica, California's KCRW 89.9 FM, is lovingly, almost obsessively hosted by Nic Harcourt. He finds the most exciting new music well before most others are playing it and gives his listeners the fresh inside track. Sounds Eclectic is like a weekly mix tape of the newest songs combined with incredibly human interviews with emerging artists. Find out how you can listen.

And after you've found a favorite new song or two, check out our public radio favorites this week: a kick in the grass; making the best of potty talk; Arkansas traveler; Power Mom; month of sundaes; new face of America; and life post-wrecking ball?

We want to hear from you. What's the best public radio story you heard this past week? Share.

If you want to listen, you'll need RealPlayer on your computer. (If you don't already have it, it's a FREE download.) Visit Real Networks.

FRIDAY, April 13 | New Women's League a Kick in the Grass
Spirit. Courage. Power. Freedom. Now they're more than just high ideals. They're four of the eight teams in the new family-friendly Women's United Soccer Association, a brand-new professional league that will feature stars of the widely adored U.S. Women's World Cup team as well as top international players. What will distinguish the new league from its competitors in the congested world of sports marketing? Modestly paid Mia Hamm, Brandi Chastain, and their teammates are "unabashed role models." [All Things Considered]
Listen (length of clip 4 min 45 sec).

SATURDAY, April 14 | Making the Best of Potty Talk
How do you foster a love for science early in a child's life? One way may be communicating in her/his own language. You know, the language of the playground. "Grossology," a new interactive traveling exhibit now on display at Portland's Oregon Museum of Science and Industry and in St. Louis, playfully uses kids' fascination with bodily functions to teach them all about their bodies. Characters like "Nigel Nose It All" and "the Burp Guy" are delighting children and educating them at the same time. [Weekend Edition Saturday]
Listen (3:45).

Find out where you can see Grossology near you.

SUNDAY, April 15 | Wanna Be An Arkansas Traveler?
Tired of trips to typical resort towns? Well, go somewhere "distinctive," at least as the National Trust for Historic Preservation defines it. Eureka Springs, Arkansas, a town of 2,278 in the Ozark Mountains, was just named to the Trust's second annual list of a "Dozen Distinctive Destinations." What's behind such a designation? Carefully preserved historic buildings, a strong stand against the rising tide of urban sprawl, and a thriving network of local businesses, among other things. [Weekend Edition Sunday]
Listen (2:59).

Have you visited any of distinctive dozen? Visit the National Trust's Web site.

MONDAY, April 16 | Mom's Productivity Secret
Marian Winik, author of "Rules for the Unruly," states what most mothers consider to be the obvious: there's no such thing as a mom who doesn't work. In the continual cultural struggle to build healthy families alongside busy careers, mothers are on the frontlines. Now a convert to the idea that families breed creative power, Winik once believed that she could only be productive in quiet solitude. She concedes, though: "Family life nourishes everything." [All Things Considered]
Listen (3:00).

Marian Winik is the author of Rules for the Unruly.

TUESDAY, April 17 | A Month of Sundaes
A summer's worth of rolling blackouts in energy-crunched California may just create some unlikely opportunities. Like eating a whole pint of ice cream in one sitting since the freezer isn't running. Like marathon parlor game sessions (yes, Web surfers, Scrabble and Monopoly still exist!). Listen to commentator Pat Morrison invokes John F. Kennedy. She wants Californians to realize: if the power goes out, long walks and cool breezes aren't such a bad thing. [Morning Edition]
Listen (2:19).

WEDNESDAY, April 18 | Building a New Bridge
When Jeff Biggers returned to the southern Illinois of his early childhood after many years away, he found a different place from the middle-American river town that he had left behind. He realized it when a local gave him directions in Spanish. A growing Latino community had changed the look and feel of sleepy, once-crumbling Beardstown and had infused it with newfound vibrancy. [Morning Edition]
Listen (2:48).

THURSDAY, April 19 | New Life After the Wrecking Ball?
Buoyed by his election on campaign promises about widespread urban renewal, Philadelphia's new mayor is determined to reverse the decay of central city neighborhoods like Juniata. He's calling for the redevelopment of 31,000 vacant lots and the demolition of 14,000 gutted buildings. Promising to invest millions, perhaps billions toward the effort, he wants to offer Philadelphia a fresh start. It's enough to make anybody who loves the city excited, but does he have a realizable plan? [Morning Edition]
Listen (3:57).
