PRI's This American Life
In the most recent gripping edition of this weekly look at how real people live and understand each other, host Ira Glass and company take a long hard look at the human stories -- and the contradictions -- behind the Israeli/Palestinian conflict. [WBEZ Chicago]
Listen (1 hour).

:: The This American Life Web site includes many excellent links to learn more about last week's show. Visit this page and be sure to follow the links to the "Give It To Them" gallery pages for essays, Web sites, statistics, and vignettes about the human beings on both sides of the conflict.

Transom.org and Inside Housing
Clean, safe housing is a basic human need. But "housing" and "home" have entirely different meanings -- and present entirely different challenges -- for each of us. Inside Housing is a locally focused series that looks at what creator Amy Dorn calls "stories of home" and what it means for different people in the Chicago area. Whether it raises issues of security (as with this audio clip about Patricia Evans) or affordability or educational access, the quest to find appropriate shelter is one of the most human of pursuits. [WBEZ Chicago]
Listen (7:00).

:: Learn more about Inside Housing on the Transom.org Web site and from WBEZ Chicago's Chicago Matters Web site.

NPR's Fresh Air with Terry Gross
Gross' deeply affecting voice is a daily elixir for commuters stuck in traffic, but it's the truths she's able to reveal through her interviews on everything from AIDS to entertainment that make the most difference. Earlier this week, the show featured two pediatricians who treat children with HIV and AIDS at New York's Harlem Hospital Center and focus not only on the children's ability to stay physically healthy but also on their long-term psychological well-being. [WHYY Philadelphia]
Listen (38:48).

NPR's The Tavis Smiley Show
Smiley's energy -- and his intelligent, engaging treatment of issues that affect African Americans -- are refreshing new additions to the world of public radio. In this piece, we hear from 13-year-old Kenya Jordana James, the founder of Blackgirl, a new magazine for African American girls that helps to present positive role models and constructive and creative outlets for teens. [WHYY Philadelphia]
Listen (6:13).

NPR's The Todd Mundt Show
Everyday, Mundt talks with people who are working on things you always wish you knew more about but were afraid to ask. This Wednesday (August 7, 2002), he spoke with Jane Golden of Philadelphia's Mural Arts Program about its city-wide program to help boost morale in disadvantaged by facilitating the creation of "urban folk art" in the form of over 2000 colorful wall murals. [Michigan Radio]
Listen (1 hour).

:: Learn more about The Todd Mundt Show and Philadelphia's Mural Arts Program.

PRI's World Cafe
Since 1991, David Dye's show has combined frank and open conversations with emerging and established artists and songwriters making music that matters with spare in-studio performances you'd give anything to record. If you can picture sitting comfortable sharing a cup of coffee with your favorite musician, you'll begin to get a sense of how great Dye's job really is. In the past, he's talked with such Good Gravy as the Afro Celt Sound System, Beth Amsel, Be Good Tanyas, Dan Bern, and Kasey Chambers, among many others. [WXPN University of Pennsylvania]

:: Learn more about the World Cafe and its upcoming shows.

NPR's Living On Earth
Steve Curwood's hopeful voice lends a sense of optimism to the grassroots efforts throughout the world that are dedicated to ensuring environmental preservation and ecological health. In this piece, we hear one of the many advocates for the natural world that Curwood welcomes to the show. It's author Sy Montgomery, who offers an enthusiastic, passionate account of her quest to catch a glimpse of a rare Amazonian marine mammal from her book, Journey of the Pink Dolphins. [WBUR Boston]
Listen (33:00).

:: Learn more about Living On Earth and about Sy Montgomery's book Journey of the Pink Dolphins.
