Early in the Internet game, Dave Coburn registered the domain name "goodthings.com." In 1998, while an MBA student at the University of Washington, Dave spoke to fellow student Barcy Fisher about his idea of using the Internet to promote "good things" in the world to help shift public discourse away from the negative and toward a more balanced and enriching conversation. Barcy, reeling from reading that days headlines (war in Kosovo, AIDS epidemic in Africa, the Lewinsky scandal, hurricane devastation), was immediately hooked. Together, they determined to build a sustainable, for-profit business that could serve as a marketing distribution platform for good good companies, good products, good people, good stories. A Letter from Our CEO What in the world are we up to at goodthings.com? Well, truth be told, we are a very young (months old) and small (five of us full-time and many wonderful helpers) venture working hard to build a sustainable, profitable company that will help people feel good, buy good and do good. We make it convenient and fun for you to learn about all of the goodthings going on in the world. Why are we doing this? It all comes down to trying to live enriching and productive lives. We all want that, right? And, it's not all that easy these days because we're busy with work and family and doing the laundry. Finding goodthings to enrich our lives is difficult and time-consuming. The nightly news certainly doesn't do it, and there is simply too much information out there for each of us to sort though. That's why were building goodthings.com. We want to do the heavy lifting for you. We want to make it possible for you to live and breathe and experience more goodthings effortlessly. What's "good" to us? We recognize that what is "good" to us may not necessarily be "good" to you. Its a very subjective and elusive thing sometimes. Thats why we like to give examples. "Good" is something you know when you see or experience it. Here are some things that are good in our book:
Where are we now? We're in our infancy, but growing every day. We're in what we fondly call our "grassroots phase" experimenting with this Web site and our goodletters (e-mail newsletters) to see if our concept and our content resonate with you, our grassroots. Were building this business one day at a time, toward a VERY big vision. We want goodthings to be on the evening news, in your daily newspaper, playing on your morning commute radio, and all over your favorite Web sites. We want to infuse constructive, creative, connective stories and products into your everyday life. And well only get there with your help and participation.
