GoodThings, Inc. Unveils New Line of 110 Greeting Cards at National Stationery Show in New York City
Created From the Powerful and Touching Personal Contributions to GoodThings.com, GoodThings' Greeting Cards Use Real Voices to Share a Positive Human Message
SEATTLE, May 20, 2002 Seattle-based GoodThings, Inc. unveiled its line of 110 unique, reader-inspired greeting cards today at the National Stationery Show in New York City. Using the voices of real people—not copywriters, celebrities or philosophers -- GoodThings' one-of-kind greeting cards celebrate the positive things that make our world extraordinary. Gathered from and inspired by readers of the weekly The GoodLetter -- the group's international e-magazine that connects everyday people through their personal stories about making a difference in the world -- GoodThings' greeting cards capture the common passions of people around the world.
“GoodThings' Web site is a powerful vehicle used by people around the world to share their own positive stories and ideas,” said Barcy Fisher, founder and CEO of GoodThings, Inc. “When a reader from South Africa writes that her favorite GoodThings are 'walks on the beach with her children, bright sunsets and a cup of coffee early in the morning,' it is so simple, but so universal. She made a very personal connection with readers thousands of miles away and we wanted to share those connections beyond the Web.”
Initially launched as a Web site fostering personal stories about what they view as fundamentally human and constructive in the world, GoodThings.com quickly became an antidote to the daily headlines for over 50,000 worldwide subscribers. One of the most popular community-building features of the Web site, “Favorite GoodThings,” was filled with simple contributions of readers, including their letters, sayings, and everyday inspirations. To share the wisdom, humanity, and humor of those real voices, GoodThings turned to greeting cards, one of the most powerful and popular ways that people use to stay in touch.
In November 2001, GoodThings began production on its initial line of cards. Within five months the company produced 110 individual cards in seven series. The following series of 110 cards are available at retail locations throughout the United States and on the Web at www.goodthings.com:
- Colorful Voices captures the refreshing and honest words of students aged five to eight at the University Co-Op in Seattle. A portion of the proceeds from each card benefits the school's arts education efforts.
- One World celebrates what it means to be a constructive citizen of the world. Even though culture and language vary, there are many simple things -- and a shared humanity -- that connect us all.
- Expressions are simple, colorful one-word messages for all occasions.
- Many Voices, both inspired and written by GoodThings readers from around the world, are highly evocative phrases and memories that focus on the important things in life -- friendship, family, dreams, and more.
- Worldwide Favorite GoodThings uses the voices of real people from Iowa to Malaysia to share the simple, favorite aspects of everyday life, for example, “a warm comforter on a cold night, the New York Times crossword puzzle and lying in the grass looking up at the sky.”
- Stamp Connecting pays homage to the quirky and colorful world of postage stamps and makes them as engaging inside the envelope as they are essential on the outside.
- Happy Holidays features a wide range of holiday cards inspired by each GoodThings greeting card series.
"Even though we began as a Web site and the world is staying connected more and more via the Internet, we know how important it still is for people to stay in touch through personal cards and hand-written notes," said Fisher. "GoodThings' greeting cards represent the best of two powerful mediums coming together with a very clear purpose: to do good and to share the fact that at their core, people around the world are all much more alike than they are different."

How Do We Define "Good"?

"Good" is, of course, subjective.
To us, "good" has authenticity, depth, nuance
and character.
"goodthings" means specific things (people, organizations,
stories, products, ideas) that are
| · |
creative (inventive, imaginative, original, ingenious, resourceful), |
| · |
constructive (helpful, positive, beneficial, useful, productive) and |
| · |
connective (linking, bridging, joining people and ideas together). |
"Good" to us is not about perfection, nor is it a Pollyanna-ish emphasis on the
positive. Instead it is a celebration of the many, diverse aspects of good
already present in our world.
