Answers to Questions

Site Navigation Questions

Where are the stories and articles?

The stories and articles are located in the "Good Guides" section. We place the articles into 5 categories — "Good Stories," "Good Work," "Good Actions," "Good People," and "Good Gravy." You can get to the "Good Guides" section by clicking on either the "home" icon located directly below the goodthings.com logo, or by clicking on the "Good Guides" tab at the top of each page. In the future, there will also be stories about goodthings happening at our sponsor and partner organizations.

Where can I see all of the stories available in a "Good Guide?"

When you click on the tabs along the top of the page, you are taken to an entry page for that section. On this page, you will find a brief description of the section, and will see a menu of choices in the left-hand column. For "Good Guides," this menu of choices lists each of the five individual guides. Clicking on one will take you to a page that includes a listing of all of the stories available for that guide.

From deeper within a section, you can return to the entry page by clicking either the related tab, or the section title in the left-hand column menu of choices.

How can I find individual stories?

You can access the individual stories highlighted on the home page by clicking on the "read >" text below each story. From the "Good Guides" index pages, you can click on the "read >" text below the title and lead-in for the story.

What are the tabs along the top?

The tabs along the top are the titles of our five main sections. Clicking on one of the tabs will take you to the index page for that particular section. From there, you can learn more about the section and the various options available to you within.

About goodthings.com, inc.

How long have you been around?

The idea for goodthings was hatched several years ago by our co-founder, Dave. It took on a more structured form starting in 1998 when he discussed his idea with our other co-founder, Barcy. They incorporated goodthings.com in December of 1999, and the company has been growing ever since. The first version of our Web site was produced in summer 2000, and the current version has been in place since fall 2000.

What are your plans for the site?

We have grand visions for the goodthings site. While our possibilities are constrained somewhat by the resources available, we envision adding features such as personalization, intelligent site "guides," and opportunities to purchase the items covered in our stories and articles. If you have suggestions or comments on how we can improve the site, please contact us by sending an e-mail to information@goodthings.com.

Where are you located?

We are located in downtown Seattle, Washington. For more details, visit the contact us page in the "Help" section.

Are you affiliated with Martha Stewart?

Nope.

What's your business model — how do you intend to make money?

goodthings is developing multiple revenue streams from (a) corporate sponsors who want to tell their stories to interested consumers, (b) syndication of content, and (c) commerce based on unique, values-based products.

Goodletter (the goodthings newsletter) Questions

How can I subscribe to your newsletter (the goodletter), and what do I get with it?

Subscribing to our e-mail newsletter is easy, and it's free!!! The simplest way to do so from here is to click on the "get the goodletter" button in the left-hand column of every page on this site. Clicking on the "Get Weekly Updates 'click here'" button in the upper-right-hand corner accomplishes the same thing. You may also send a blank e-mail to join-goodletter-html@list.goodthings.com (for the HTML version (laid out like a Web page)), or join-goodletter@list.goodthings.com (for the plain text version (best for AOL users and others whose e-mail programs have problems reading HTML code)).
You’ll receive an e-mail every week containing the same flavor of content you find on our site. In the future, we plan to offer a variety of options more tailored to specific preferences (more focused on a particular "Good Guide," a digest version for people that wish to receive it less frequently, etc.).

How often will I receive it?

Once a week.

How do I unsubscribe?

We really hope that you won’t want to unsubscribe after reading our goodletters, but if you do, here’s how you do it. Using the e-mail address you used to sign up for the goodletter, send a blank e-mail to: leave-goodletter-html@list.goodthings.com (for the HTML version), or leave-goodletter@list.goodthings.com (for the plain text version). If you have any questions or problems, just contact us at information@goodthings.com, and tell us your name and the e-mail address you used to subscribe.

I'm having problems unsubscribing...help!!!

We like to think that we have a relatively simple system for automating the "unsubscribe" process, but it is definitely not perfect. One of the biggest problems we run into is people following our instructions, and then being told by the system that they are not subscribed in the first place. We've found that this is the result of the way some e-mail addresses are structured (see below for more details if you're really interested). If you are having this, or any other problems unsubscribing, just e-mail us at information@goodthings.com and let us know. We will be more than happy to help you out.

For those of you that just have to know, the problem referred to above involves an e-mail provider setting up their system so that it appears that a person's e-mail address is "somebody@service_provider.com", when in fact it is actually "somebody@email.service_provider.com" (notice the added "email" after the "@" symbol). The person in question is routed e-mails sent to the shorter version, but outgoing e-mails from them are sent as the longer version. This is transparent to the person sending and receiving e-mails with that e-mail address, but causes confusion for the automated system (which is looking for the shorter version that people actually sign up under).

What can I do about formatting problems when I read the goodletter?

We have worked hard to put our goodletter in a format that is as friendly to as broad a range of individual users and their e-mail systems as possible. We do realize, however, that there are some users who are receiving the goodletter in a less-than-ideal format. To help us better deal with this problem, your input is greatly appreciated. Send an e-mail to information@goodthings.com describing (if you know it):
  • the formatting problem you are having (apostrophes causing line breaks, commas becoming foreign characters, etc.)
  • your e-mail client (Outlook Express, Eudora, Netscape, AOL, etc.)
  • your browser (Netscape, Internet Explorer, etc.)
  • your computer’s operating system (Windows, Mac, etc.)
  • any other information you feel might be relevant.

We are grateful to a number of readers who have suggested ways of dealing with these problems. Many of you may have found solutions to similar problems in the past, and we welcome your input.

Got a question?

We think we have a great site that is easy to use. But we’ve all been to sites whose creators probably thought the same thing, and yet we still had questions about them. If you still can’t find the answer you are looking for, please feel free to contact us. You can reach us , or try one of the other methods listed in the .
